TEAM GAMES
KIDSPACE The Party Place is the perfect place to host an active group of youngsters ready for intense competition. The large, adaptable spaces and the available equipment make it easy for you and great fun for the party-goers.
Team games are best suited for children five and older. Consider involving the adults. The children will love competing with the grown-ups and the "big kids" will have lots of fun too!
Listed here you will find suggestions for sports games, physical challenges and relay races.
All equipment needed is available, free of charge, for your use at KIDSPACE The Party Place unless specifically noted in the game instructions.
Older children will want to have large blocks of time to engage in friendly competitive activities - plan your party schedule accordingly.
CROSSING THE BRIDGE
KIDSPACE equipment needed: one balance beam
Pre-party preparation: none
Divide the children into two teams. Each team lines up at either end of the beam.
The competition begins when one person from each team mounts the beam and tries to cross the beam without falling off. If successful he gets in line at the side of the opposing team. If not successful goes back to his line. The first team to get all their players to the other side of the beam is the winner.
DROP THE CLOTHES PIN IN THE BUCKET
KIDSPACE equipment needed: clothes pins and buckets
Pre-party preparation: none
Divide the children into two or more teams (each team will need their own bucket). Give each child a clothespin.
The bucket is placed a distance from the children. The object of the relay race is for each child to walk with the clothespin between their knees to the bucket and drop it in without using their hands. If the clothes pin drops before the child makes it to the bucket their turn is over and they must return to their line and the next person goes. The team with the most clothespins in the bucket is the winner.
SACK RACES
KIDSPACE equipment needed: burlap sacks, cones
Pre-party preparation: none
Children divide up into two or more teams. Half the team is at one end and the other half is at the other end. Each team is given a burlap sack.
Individual Sack Race - The race begins when the starter says "GO". The first racer on each team steps into the burlap bag and hops to the other end where he hands off the bag to the next team member. The race is won when all the team members are back in their original starting spots (everyone races twice).
Three Legged Sack Race - In this race two people on each team put one leg into the sack and must move to the cones and turn around and go back. The burlap bag is then handed off to the next pair in line. The race is won when every child on the team has had a turn to race. An uneven number of children mean that one child will have to race twice.
BROKEN CAR RELAY RACE
KIDSPACE equipment needed: cones for turnaround
Pre-party preparation: none
Children divide up into two or more teams. The teams are given 2 or 3 car problems. The first time through ALL the team members must act out the first problem while moving to the turnaround cones and back again. The second time through the ALL the team members act out the second problem and so on. The winning team is the first team to have all their team members race acting out each of the car problems.
Ideas for car problems:
broken horn - run while sounding like a broken horn
flat tire - hop
reverse only - run backwards
stuck windshield wipers - run with hands going back and forth
car won't start - team mate runs with hands on the back of a team mate pretending to push him/her
no brakes - run as fast as possible
no steering - run in zig-zag fashion
LEAP FROG RELAY
KIDSPACE equipment needed: cones for finish line if needed
Pre-party preparation: none
Divide the guests into two or more teams. Each of the people on the team squat down in a line. On the "GO" signal the last person in line jumps over each team members back by putting their hands on the back of a squatting team mate and leaping over them like a frog. When he/she reaches the front of the line he/she squats down and the last person in line starts leaping over team-mates backs until he/she reaches the front. The winning team is the first team to have the starting person at the back of the line again.
For small teams - use cones to mark the finish line and the first team to get all team members across the finish line is the winner.
CREEPY CRAWLY RELAY RACE
KIDSPACE equipment needed: a bean bag or other unbreakable object
Pre-party preparation: none
This is much like leap frog with a few minor changes. The group of children is divided into teams of not more than four players on a team. The teams do not have to have equal numbers on them. Each team makes a line and stands an equal distance from the object in the middle as the other teams.
On the "GO" signal each team member gets down on all fours and the last person in line with his/her legs astride straddles each team mate untiil he reaches the front of the line and he/she then gets down on all fours. The last person now gets up and straddles the players moving to the front of the line. When the line gets close enough the first person in line can reach for the object. The first person can stretch out their body to get it, however, the second person in line must hold onto the ankles of the first person so they don't break their line.
The first team to retrieve the object is the winner.
This game can also be played with each team being the first team to retrieve their own object at the finish line.
DODGEBALL
KIDSPACE equipment needed: balls and something to mark the center line
Pre-party preparation: none
Dogdeball is an age old game enjoyed by children and adults. This is a great game for the whole family.
The playing field is divided in half with a line down the middle. Each team is given balls and at the signal players begin throwing balls at the other team.
A player must go to the side line if they are hit with a ball.
If a player catches a thrown ball then ithe thrower is out AND a player from the catcher's side re-enters the game.
Balls may not hit a player in the face - if so, the thrower is out and not the hit player.
Play continues until one team has no more players.
